The aim of the initiative is to raise money for Action Asia Foundation to fund transformative programmes that can help those with disabilities live their fullest, most independent lives. The programmes will provide rehabilitation and job training, offer mentorship by Paralympians, and resilience workshops, as well as create access to sport, health, and nature.
Jo’s career as a professional jockey came to an abrupt halt in 1999 when another horse cut his path during a race, and he was flung while riding at 50km per hour, leaving him with a broken back that changed the trajectory of his life. Unable to return to his former career, Jo, after years of physical rehabilitation, strength and conditioning training, took up running and charity challenges to lead a healthier and more purposeful life that can also help others. With the belief that everyone deserves opportunities to heal and thrive, Jo conceptualised the UNBOUND UltraRun, a self-challenge dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities overcome obstacles and live their fullest lives.
In his most ambitious run yet from Beijing to Hong Kong, Jo, alongside Action Asia Foundation, aims to shine a spotlight on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. To do so, Jo will be carrying with him the clean shoes of those in wheelchairs, symbolically taking them and their ambitions on this challenging run with him. In a fast-paced city like Hong Kong, the dirty shoes of a runner tell the story of grit and make it easy to overlook the unparalleled courage of those in wheelchairs simply because their wheels cover the miles while their shoes remain clean. By taking their clean shoes with him, Jo is acknowledging their tenacity and embodying the spirit of going further together.
